May 2021
I consider the recent work on a continuum with previous work from 2021/2020 that have loopy/snakey directional elements dominating the canvas. I've gradually become more interested in the surrounding marks that supported them. Another shift in this current body of work is the conscious use of a range of ground colors that are a nod to visual popular culture of 70's comics and graphics that were likely my first exposure to visual art forms. This is an uneasy influence for a number of reasons, for instance for its lack of inclusivity. I'm thinking about its influence as a pervasive norm of the times then, and the lingering impact to this day.
